Objectives:

For more than 100 years, tumour patients have been treated with mistletoe preparations, mostly on an individual basis as part of integrative oncological care. The aims of mistletoe therapy are tumour control, support for conventional therapies and their tolerability, strengthening of the entire organism and improvement of quality of life. Mistletoe therapy has since been included in some medical guidelines issued by professional associations. New findings and therapeutic approaches in oncology are also opening up new options for the use and further development of mistletoe therapy. For this reason, the role of mistletoe in tumour therapy is repeatedly re-examined scientifically at the mistletoe symposia held every four years. These symposia are intended to provide scientists and doctors with a forum for discussion and to create a basis for scientific discourse. The Further Training Programme is aimed at physicians, pharmacists and all those involved in the therapy of tumour patients. The organisers would like to invite you to attend.

This time, the clinical section will focus on the following topics: Mistletoe in the Context of Modern Immunotherapies and Multimodal Therapy Concepts in Integrative Oncology, and the Role of Mistletoe in such Concepts.

The organizers are calling for current scientific contributions (short lectures and/or posters) from basic research and clinical practice of the mistletoe in the tumour therapy. The box below gives examples of some of the topics covered:

  • Botany, physiology, pharmacy and phytochemistry: appropriate standardisation, assurance of pharmaceutical quality of mistletoe preparations, their analytics and galenic.
  • Immunology, pre-clinic, cytotoxicity, mode of action profile of the active ingredients and total extracts
  • Tumour-specific application: for solid and epithelial tumours, haemoblastoses, for benign tumours, for recurrence prophylaxis after tumour surgery, for defined precancerous lesions, influence of mistletoe therapy on metastasis
  • Posology, mode of application: Dosing regimens and therapeutic range, effects of the route of administration on the therapeutic range
  • Immune parameters before and during mistletoe therapy; immune status; follow-up parameters for monitoring mistletoe therapy
  • Clinical research and proof of efficacy: clinical studies with mistletoe, objective criteria for proof of efficacy, further developments in mistletoe therapy
  • Health services research data/Real World Data on outcome, tolerability, safety and cost-effectiveness
  • Drug safety: analysis of side effects with regard to effect and efficacy, type and frequency of adverse drug reactions, pseudo allergic reactions
  • Contributions to meta-analyses; systematic reviews and their evaluation
  • Pharmacoeconomics
  • Regulatory topics

In order to create a common basis for discussion, general overview lectures are also planned.

The abstracts of all symposium contributions will be published in an international scientific journal and will be available online at the symposium date. All symposium participants will receive access to the abstracts and, upon request, a printed copy.

Participation in the Mistletoe Symposium and the hybrid training programme, cost contribution:

The Mistletoe Symposium will take place in person with a training programme on Friday, which can also be attended online. The number of participants and contributions in the scientific part of the symposium is limited. The decision on the acceptance of contributions and their form of presentation is the responsibility of the Scientific Organizing Committee.

No event fees will be charged for participation in the Mistletoe Symposium. Travel, accommodation and meals on site must be paid for by each participant.

Language:

The symposium will be held in German. Simultaneous translation into English will be provided for all presentations, including contributions to the discussion.

Presentations and posters may also be presented in English.

Publication of conference proceedings:

After the symposium, all contributions will be published in conference proceedings as soon as possible. We therefore ask authors to submit a print-ready manuscript of their contribution by 31 January 2028.

The guidelines for authors of book articles are available at www.mistelsymposium.de.

Continuing education credits:

Certification and accreditation as a continuing education event by the Saarland Medical Association (Landesärztekammer) and Saarland Chamber of Pharmacists (Landesapothekerkammer) will also be applied for the 9th Mistletoe Symposium.
